Even Fit People Improve…

Jamie was a really interesting case as he is probably one of the fittest participants (when measured by conventional standards) we’ve seen, just look at his Vo2 Max. Young and training for a Marathon. He did have a few things working against him however. Ulcerative Colitis which not only caused massive digestive issues and systemic inflammation resulting in high body fat and visceral fat. It also affected his posture giving him pelvic tilt which in turn affected his running gait.

His running also led him to be low on muscle mass and upper body strength and, we thought, probably contributed to his gut issues. So while he looked a picture of health his scores told us something different. This all combined to give him his high initial Physical Age.

We realised straight away we would get the biggest bang for our buck going straight at his colitis and so targeted it with a carefully modulated diet and supplementation plan. We didn’t imagine we’d get rid of it as his intense training was simply creating too much inflammation to do that but we were hopeful we could at least control it long enough to get him through to race day after which we could really start lowering his inflammation and bringing his muscle mass up.

The Result

His colitis calmed down to levels he’d never experienced before. Normally he has a massive flare up in Spring and Autumn and whilst he did have a few grumbles at the end of March, he managed to stay away from a major flare up for this entire period.

Meaning his body was able to absorb more nutrients, his body fat dropped and his running gait improved as he was no longer having to cradle his belly due to bloating. We combined this with a progressive marathon training plan and he’s just PB’d the half marathon at the halfway stage of his training with a sub 1:35 time. He was hoping to get sub 1:45 when he started the program (which would still have been a PB).

We’re excited to see how he does in the actual marathon in a few weeks’ time.
